DECEMBER 2017

Monday 12/11- There are still short Bass in the wash on bait and plugs.  Steve Hasings of the Merchantville Fishing Club reported double digit "schoolie" bass on small swim-shads in North Beach.  John Baxter also reported a few short bass on bait.  No keeper Bass caught that I was aware of.  Also I had no reports of Tog from the inlet.  Not sure if the Tog are still there or not.  I'm hoping to get some specific reports from a couple of guys that were trying, just haven't heard back from them yet. - John

Sunday 12/10- Well, another LBI Derby has ended.  There were no weigh-in's today, but it certainly wasn't from lack of effort.  Many anglers were out there fishing hard.  Several short bass were reported on bait and on plugs, but nothing big enough to qualify for the Derby.  We had a great turnout for our Annual Customer appreciation BBQ.  Thank you all for stopping in and making this event special for us.  Sue and I love what we do here at SCBT, and it's because of amazing & friendly people like you.  I have posted our revised store hours above.  But as you know, you can always call our cell phones if you need anything outside of our normal store hours.  There are still Bass in the wash, and we will continue to stock fresh bunker as long as the demand warrants.  And we still have our 25% off SALE through December 25th.  Some great deals just in time for Christmas.  I'm hitting the beach at dawn to throw some plugs.  See you on the beach. - John

Saturday 12/09- The weather seemed to keep many anglers off the beach today, but there were still people fishing.  We had scattered reports of "schoolie" Bass on bait and plugs/teasers with a few keeper size fish mixed in.  Chauncey sent in this shot of his 31 inch Bass he landed last night at 10:30PM in Ship Bottom.  He also released a short fish as well.  Local Surf City resident Eric sent me his report this morning at 4:50AM from the front beach in Surf City.  He had non-stop action for an hour straight releasing 6 short bass and losing several others.  We also had a Derby Bass weighed in already this morning.  Bill Montrey caught this 8.40 pound, 29-1/4 inch Bass from the Harvey Cedars surf on bunker.  Bill landed this fish around 7:30 this morning and also released a short fish as well.  Don Ingling caught this 12.80 pound, 33-1/4 inch fish on bunker in Harvey Cedars.  Don caught the fish at 4:15PM today.  Nice fish Don!!  One of the largest we've seen from the beach in a while.  Photos are on our "2017 PHOTOS" page.- John

Friday 12/08- The Striped Bass action on the boats was VERY good today.  Brendan Craig had a truly EPIC day as you will see below.  Along the surf there were several reports of short bass on bait & plugs.  Not everyone caught fish, in fact most did not, but we did have a couple Striped Bass weighed in for the Derby as you can see below.   Updates follow in reverse chronological order.  Photos are on our "2017 PHOTOS" page.- John
7:45 PM Update- I just received a text from Bendan Craig with his report and some photos from their boat trip today.  All I can say is WOW!!!!  Here is Brendan's report:  "Quick report from offshore.   We trolled all morning from 6am-10:30 with only one knock down.   Then got a call from a friend off ship bottom we ran up and quickly found the absolute best striper fishing I have ever experienced, I honestly lost count at 43 fish.   We were on double headers the entire afternoon.  So at least double my number.  Continued to catch double headers non stop. All the fish were hitting poppers or metal lips.   Herring were getting busted clean out of the water.  I can honestly say that was the most consistent fishing I have experienced.   Guys jigging  were catching, but metal lips were the ticket we absolutely out-fished the other boats because we had them keyed in on metal lips.   We left them blitzing because we couldn't stand any more.    My TFO was the ticket.   Thanks for that.   Oh, the best part was the size all teen-25lb class fish with some bigger ones mixed in.   Our biggest was at 46”, then a 43” and a 38”.    Not one short!!    Tonight the beach could be on fire.   All but two 30” fish released,  including the big girls.     We figured honestly we had over 150 fish easy.  Non stop from 11-4:15".  A huge thanks to Brendan for this report and all the photos.  I'm super jealous. - John
5:50 PM Update- Just had another Derby Striped Bass weighed in.  Matthew Defilippo, pictured with his 12 year old son Owen, landed this 9.18 pound, 29-1/4 inch Bass at 3:30 this afternoon.  They were fishing right here in Surf City using bunker and lost a couple other fish before landing this one.  Nice fish!!!!  We did get in another 200 pounds of Fresh Bunker a couple hours ago, so we should have enough for the remainder of the derby.  Let you know if any other reports come in. - John
3:55 PM Update- A few short bass being reported on bait and sand eel imitations.  Most of these fish are in the 15-20 inch range.  I did just weigh in a Derby Bass for Donald Tharp (left photo).  Don's fish went 8.46 pounds, 29-3/4 inches and hit bunker in Loveladies at 10:00AM.  This was the only fish and hit Don had today.  Joe Thiel sent in a couple nice photos.  He released a 17-1/2 inch bass on bunker in North Beach (right photo).  Joe also got a nice picture of a Snowy Owl (middle photo) on the dune fence in North Beach.  Guess the snow really is on the way.  "Blue-eyed" Bill just stopped in with a report.  He released a 26 inch Bass a few hours ago on bunker fishing in Surf City.  Lots of anglers airing up to beat the snow, but there are also guys just heading out.  I will let you know if I hear of any more reports. - John

Thursday 12/07- Very slow fishing again today.  There were some reports of short Bass, but not everyone caught fish.  There was one Bass weighed in for the Derby. - John

Wednesday 12/06- Very slow fishing today.  There were a few folks fishing but only a few reports of short Bass.  No derby weigh-in's today. - John

Tuesday 12/05- Finally a decent day of surf fishing for many.  Several derby Bass weighed in today.  Here are some of the highlights today:  Rich Leyh released his first Striped Bass while fishing with Fishnut Joe.  Rich Kindt released several short Bass before this 8.34 pound, 28-3/4 inch Bass hit just before midnight in Ship Bottom.  Rich was using bunker and had steady action for a solid hour around midnight.  Francis Pons with a 9.10 pound, 29.00 inch Bass caught at 7:45AM right here in Surf City.  Bob Daley beached his 7.92 pound, 28-3/4 inch Bass in Ship Bottom at 11:30AM.  The Hettler brothers each had Derby Bass caught in Harvey Cedars.  Joseph Hettler's Bass was caught at 10:50AM and went 11.80 pounds, 32-1/4 inches.  Francis Hettler's Bass was 9.78 pounds, 29-1/2 inches and was landed at 12:25PM.  Marie Huber-Rhubart landed her 9.78 pound, 29.00 inch Bass in Harvey Cedars at 10:00AM.  Our heaviest Bass so far today was caught by Brendan Dunleavy at 10:45AM.  Brendan's fish weighed 14.00 pounds and was 31-3/4 inches long.  Donald Tharp caught his 8.14 pound, 28-1/2 inch Bass at 7:00AM in North Beach.  Congratulations everyone and thanks for stopping in here to weigh your catch.  Hope this is the start of a great final week for the LBI Fall Derby.  I will let you know if I hear of anything more to report.  Photos are on our "2017 PHOTOS" page.- John

Monday 12/04- Surf fishing slowed down again today unfortunately.  We did have a Derby weigh-in along with a few short Bass reported.  Bill Montrey had a decent day fishing the beach in Harvey Cedars.  He released 2 keeper Bass, a short Bass, and kept this nice Bass for the table and to weigh in for the Derby.  This fish went 11.92 pounds, 33.00 inches and hit bunker.  Congrats to Bill on a nice fish.  I also got a nice picture and report from Joey Farinelli trolling off of LBI yesterday.  They had two Bass up to 23 pounds on bunker spoons and shad umbrella rigs. - John

Sunday 12/03- Surf fishing seemed to pick up a little bit today.  Most anglers did not catch fish (including me), but we had more fish weighed in and reported than the last week or so.  The boats are still doing very well on the bass trolling, jigging, and snag & dropping bunker.  Did not hear any specific Tog reports from the inlet today though.  Here are today's highlights:  11 year old Pierce Kirby caught & released his first Striped Bass ever today.  Pierce was fishing at 7:00AM in Spray Beach with a bunker chunk when this 22 inch bass hit.  Congratulations to Pierce!!!  Then Joe Thiel stopped in with this beautiful 26 inch Red Drum caught earlier today on bunker somewhere along the LBI beach front.  The O'Connell brothers bot caught fish today.  Braydon O'Connell released this nice Bass from the Harvey Cedars surf on bunker.  His brother Dylan O'Connell added another Derby fish this year with this 7.70 pound, 29-3/4 inch fish on bunker in Harvey Cedars.  Nice job Guys!!!  Tom Ward was in next with this 9.60 pound, 31.00 inch Bass also caught in Harvey Cedars on bunker.  Local Surf City resident Erik Oerther caught this nice 13.18 pound, 34-1/4 inch Bass right here in Surf City tonight just after dark using bunker.  Very nice fish Erik!!  Let you know if I hear of anything more tonight.  Hoping as usual that these few fish are the start of a decent run.  Let's see what tomorrow brings.  Photos are on our "2017 PHOTOS" page.- John

Saturday 12/02- Surf fishing was still on the slow side for most anglers.  There was some action in the afternoon on the incoming tide for a few surf anglers.  Besides the weigh-in's below, several other short and keeper size bass were reported from the front beaches from 2:00pm-dark.  Jim Braack was first in today with this 8.40 pound, 30.00 inch Bass from the Harvey Cedars surf on bunker.  Then Steve Hastings of the Merchantville Fishing Club weighed in his 8.60 pound, 29-1/2 inch Bass.  Steve was fishing North Beach and was also using bunker.  We had a larger 16.20 pound non-derby Bass weighed in by Dan.  Dan landed this fish from the 'mid-island' surf on bunker.  The last derby weigh in we had tonight was from Jeff Knoerzer.  Jeff beached this 7.72 pound, 28-1/8 inch Striped Bass in North Beach on fresh bunker.  Boaters are still doing very well on the Striped Bass trolling in 50-65 feet of water as well as snag/drop if you find the bunker pods.  The Tog action at the inlet continued for some anglers including several keepers reported.  Photos are on our "2017 PHOTOS" page.- John

Friday 12/01- Surf fishing seemed to pick up a bit today.  Had a few more fish than in recent days.  The boaters are still doing very well on the Striped Bass trolling in 60-65 feet of water as well as snag/drop if you find the bunker pods.  Our first weigh-in for the day was from Bob Braack who beached this 12.20 pound, 34.50 inch Bass in Harvey Cedars using bunker just before noon.  Reports of a few short bass in the evening along with dogfish until Tom Gardiner came in with this nice 11.00 pound, 31-3/4 inch Derby Bass caught in Ship Bottom using bunker.  Tom weighed the fish in at 7:40PM and caught it at 5:10PM.  Did have some reports of Tog at the inlet for some anglers including several keepers. - John

NOVEMBER 2017

Thursday 11/30- Surf fishing still slow here on LBI, but we did have some fish reported again today.  Ralph Vitale was back in with another derby weigh in this morning.  Ralph beached the 7.24 pound, 28-1/4 inch Bass right here in Surf City using bunker.  Ralph has had fish the last 3 days.  Captain Vince Orzel sent in this shot of a nice Bass from a boat today.  No details, but a very nice fish.  I was up on the beach throwing plugs at first light and last light - it looked really nice but I got ZIP, not a touch.  I got a text from Damon who is fishing the North Beach surf at dusk.  He released a short Bass but did get a 29 inch keeper, both on bunker.  Joe Mastrianni and Joe Frankowiak stopped in with this 20.52 pound Bass trolling just a bit north of LBI on their boat "I Got Worms".  Thanks everyone for their reports and photos.  Can't wait to see wait tomorrow brings.  Photos are on our "2017 PHOTOS" page.- John

Wednesday 11/29- We had a couple fish reported today, but overall the action on the surf is still on the slow side.   John Commisso was the first one in with a report and a weigh in.   John caught this 8.96 pound, 29-1/2 inch Bass from the mid-island surf early this morning on bunker.  John also released a couple of short bass as well.   Also received a nice report and photo from local Surf City resident Dave E.  He was out yesterday on the Sea Eagle with Captain Rick  trolling bunker spoons and did very well on Striped Bass.  Dave & his friend Frank are showing their 30 pound, and 36 pound catches.  Very nice guys, and thanks so much for the report and the pictures.  I hit the beach here in Surf City at dusk to run the dog and throw a plug.  I didn't get a touch and didn't see any fish caught.  But when I got back to the shop I had just missed Pat Presutto, aka "Smiles" and his nice Derby Bass.  Pat caught the 21.94 pound, 39-7/8 inch Bass in Harvey Cedars on bunker during the incoming tide this afternoon.  Maybe there are still some big Bass around??  Did hear of some Tog caught at the inlet today.  Not everyone was hooking up, but one angler did take home two keeper Blackfish for the table.  Still hoping to see a few more quality size Bass and big Bluefish before the end of the Derby. - John

Tuesday 11/28- Short fish continue to dominate the reports.  Francis Hettler used his bonus tag for this 27-1/8 inch, 6.94 pound Bass this morning from the Barnegat Light surf on Bunker.  His brother Joe also released 3 short bass this morning as well.  We finally had a Derby weigh-in.  Ralph Vitale landed this 9.56 pound, 29-1/8 inch derby bass from North Beach using bunker.  Then Robert Stemple stopped in with his 41 inch, 20.94 pound Bass caught trolling out of the Barnegat Inlet today.  Nice to see some fish today.  Photos are on our "2017 PHOTOS" page.- John

Thursday 11/23 thru Monday 11/27- Short Bass with the occasional keeper here and there.  Overall the surf fishing is slow. - John

Wednesday 11/22- A very slow day along the beaches of LBI once again.  A few couple short bass reported, but that was it.  Did have one nice Blackfish/Tog come in to the scale today.  Jonathan (photo below) caught this 21 inch, 5.96 pounder today at the Barnegat Inlet.  Very nice fish!!!  Hope things turn around here soon.  Haven't had a derby fish weighed in for days now.  Photos are on our "2017 PHOTOS" page.- John

Tuesday 11/21- Still very slow surf fishing on LBI.  A few short fish reported, but no derby weigh-in's again today. - John

Monday 11/20- I hate to sound like a broken record, but once again the fishing was very slow.  We had a couple of short Bass reported, but that was about it.  Hope things turn around here soon. - John

Sunday 11/19- Very slow fishing today.  Most reports were "not holding with 12 ounces and no fish".  Got to hand it to the anglers that were out there trying though.  Hope things turn around here soon. - John

Saturday 11/18- Another slow day along the beaches for most anglers with only a single derby fish weighed in.  There are still nice size fish to our North, just hope they head our way soon.  The Blackfish/Tog bite at the Barnegat inlet was good for many anglers on the in-coming tide.  There was a nice bass waiting for me this morning when I opened the shop at 4:30am.  15 year old Ryan O'Connell weighed in this 24.36 pound, 39-1/2 inch Derby Bass at 4:45am.  Ryan caught this fish at 1:20am this morning in Barnegat Light on Fresh Bunker.  Nice job Ryan!!!  Ryan's Father Greg O'Connell posted this picture of the stomach contents of Ryan's Bass.  Here is what Greg posted on Facebook: "For my angling friends that enjoy the stomach contents shot..... this is what was in Ryan's striper- Whole bunker, several mantis shrimp, several small winter Flounder, some type of pipefish or sand eel, crabs, etc.".  Thought I would share this on the website for those that don't use Facebook.  The boat fishermen were having another decent day trolling and snagging/dropping bunker.  My high school buddies Rob & John Martinelli and Dave Locket got their limit quickly trolling in 50 feet of water just north of LBI.  No photos that I could post though.  Local Surf City resident Win landed a new personal best with this one.  The 46.58 pound Striped Bass hit a snag/drop bunker from the boat north of LBI.  Nongrats to Win, and thanks for stopping in to weigh your fish and give a report.  Photos are on our "2017 PHOTOS" page.- John

Friday 11/17- Still slow along the beaches for most anglers with only a couple derby fish weighed in.   Zigurds Lieljuris caught this 9.34 pound, 28-3/4 inch Line-Sider from the surf in Harvey Cedars using Fresh Bunker.  Nice dinner fish and possibly a $100 daily prize for Zigurds - Congrats!!  Here is proof that there are some nice fish just north of LBI.  Donny caught his largest Bass ever in New Jersey (as of today) from the surf just north of LBI.  The 'non-derby' fish was 17 pounds, 37-1/4 inches and hit a snagged & dropped bunker.  Donny reported loads of bunker along the beach up there, but only had this one fish hit a bait.  There were some reports of bunker off our beaches today but not in close, and no apparent fish in them.  Really hoping the bait & bass move into our area soon.  Photos are on our "2017 PHOTOS" page.- John

Thursday 11/16- Still slow along the beaches for most anglers with only a few derby fish weighed in.  John Seifert caught this 9.24 pound Striped Bass in Surf City yesterday afternoon on fresh bunker.  This is the fish to beat for the $500 special daily prize.  Congrats to John & thanks for the nice photo from the beach.  Then Dennis Stepien caught this 20.76 pound, 39.5 inch Striped Bass at 4:30pm this afternoon in Loveladies.  Dennis was using fresh bunker and now seems to be in the lead for today's special $500 daily derby prize.  Other than these fish, the reports from the surf so far today are still very slow, with skates, dogfish, & crabs hogging the action.  Hopefully Dennis' fish is the start of some decent action.  We had a third Bass weighed in for the derby late in the day.  John Fearon caught this 8.82 pound, 29-1/2 inch fish in North Beach also using fresh bunker.  Earlier today a couple of boaters stopped in with these two 27 pound class Striped Bass from their boat fishing up near Lavalette.  Unfortunately I don't have names or details, just this really nice photo.  Really hoping things turn on here at LBI soon.  I didn't hear much about the Tog bite at the inlet, so I have no report unfortunately.   Photos are on our "2017 PHOTOS" page.- John

Wednesday 11/15- A very slow day along the beaches for most anglers with no derby fish weighed in.  I did get a nice report at 10:30pm from Damon who released 4 keeper Bass and a short Bass from the Surf City beach from 6-10pm.  Kevin Wong was just to the south of Damon at that time and only got dogfish, so the bite was not everywhere that's for sure.  The Tog bite at the inlet was there, but seemed slower than the last few days.  Still, there were some keepers reported. - John

Tuesday 11/14- Fishing was again very slow along the front beaches, but there were 3 Derby fish weighed in.  We had 2 of those weigh-in's here.  David Weaver beached this 8.38 pound, 29-1/8 inch Bass in Harvey Cedars using Bunker.  Michael Robey was right behind David on the scale with this 12.34 pound Bass.  Michael's 32 inch fish hit fresh bunker in Loveladies.  Both of these fish were caught this afternoon between 1-4pm.  Nice fish guys and thanks for stopping here to weigh in your fish.  Let you know if we get any more weigh-in's or reports tonight. - John

Monday 11/13- Rainy morning kept many anglers off the beach this morning.  We did have 2 Derby weigh-in's for the day, but again the surf action was very slow.  Greg Lagacki weighed in this 7.36 pound, 28-1/2 inch derby Bass this morning.  Greg was fishing Barnegat Light with a bucktail and also released another bass around the same size.  Hopefully this afternoon things will pick up a bit.  Well, the afternoon continued to be very slow as well.  One angler after another reported nothing but crabs while they stopped in to air up their buggies.  Then finally, at 5:50PM in walked James Malandro with this 11.56 pound, 33-1/4 inch Derby Bass.  James caught the fish at 4:50PM in Loveladies using fresh bunker.  This was the only hit James had all day.  Congrats to James!!!  Now where are the rest of the fish?  Hopefully tomorrow will be more productive along the beaches.  Blackfish/Tog action still VERY good at the inlet.  Photos are on our "2017 PHOTOS" page.- John

Sunday 11/12- There were a couple of Derby Bass finally weighed in today.  Nice fish in the teens including Pete Kelly's 12.14 pound, 31 inch Bass from North Beach this afternoon on fresh bunker.  Unfortunately I don't yet have a photo for this fish.  The surf fishing is very slow considering the number of anglers out there trying.    The boaters however were having a great day just north of LBI.  Really hoping this large body of fish to our north heads our way soon.  Surf City locals Liz Elko and Win Taylor were just in with these nice Bass on the snag/drop from a boat.  Liz's fish went 28.8 pounds, 42 inches.  Win's Bass was 58.4 pounds, 43 inches.  Nice fish, and thanks so much for stopping in with your report and to weigh your fish.  Brothers Rich & Chris Mele were in with this 30.24 pound, 44-1/2 inch Bass from Chris's boat on snag & drop bunker.  This was Rich's first ever Striped Bass.  Congrats guys and thanks for stopping in with your fish.  While Bob Massa was cleaning this fish another 34 pound Bass was thrown on the scale.  The anglers took a photo of this and will probably post it on our FaceBook page.  Charlie Harris & Frank Peoples  were with a group of 8 anglers on "The Hunter" with Captain Eddie Yates.  They did very well on the snag & drop as well.  The Blackfish/Tog bite at the Barnegat inlet remains VERY good.  Photos are on our "2017 PHOTOS" page.- John

Saturday 11/11- Had a couple derby bass weighed in today, but most anglers came up empty.  John Hoffman caught this 13.4 pound, 33-1/4 inch Bass on bunker in North Beach.  Arnold Manresa beached this 8.06 pound, 29 inch Bass in Ship Bottom also using bunker.  Jerry also stopped in with a legal Red Drum caught today somewhere in the surf on LBI.  Nice fish guys.  Again we have had some fish weighed in today, but the vast majority of reports from anglers are no hits and no fish.  But you can't catch them if your line is not in the water.  Good luck to everyone out there trying.  Photos are on our "2017 PHOTOS" page.- John

Friday 11/10- Another decent day of  surf fishing for some anglers today.  Not everyone caught fish, in fact most did not, but we had a few Striped Bass weighed in for the Derby as you can see below.   Updates follow in reverse chronological order. - John
2:45 PM Update- Two more Derby Bass just weighed in.  Pat Presutto caught this 11.96 pound, 33-3/4 inch Bass from the Loveladies surf on fresh bunker.  Then John Sullivan Jr. weighed in this 10.58 pound, 31-3/4 inch Striped Bass from the North Beach surf also on bunker.  Nice fish guys!!!  Looks like it might be an outgoing tide bite today.  I will try and keep you posted. - John
12:25 PM Update- We did get in a bushel of Live Surf Clams by some miracle.  They will not last long though.  Green Crabs also arrived.  We still have fresh bunker but could not get any more today.  Our netter was out but could not locate them with this wind.  Our next chance for fresh bunker will be Sunday.  I'm not sure how long our current supply of fresh bunker will last, but I bet we will be out by closing time tonight.  We did have another Derby weigh in this morning.  John Bonner caught this 15.18 pound, 35 inch Bass from the North Beach surf on fresh bunker.  Another quality fish may have come to our scale today, but overall the surf fishing has been slow this morning.  - John
1:30 AM- Rough conditions yesterday made surf fishing a challenge at times with the seaweed.  But we did have several Bass weighed in for the Derby.  Looks like our Fall run might be starting.  Bait status - We have a decent supply of Fresh Bunker from yesterday (Thursday).  That will probably be it until Sunday with the wind forecast that is out there.  We are currently Out of Green Crabs until later this morning (Friday).  Will let you know as soon as the Green Crabs come in.  We have salted clams, but still no clams in the shell.  We have clams in the shell on order with every delivery.  Let you know if/when we get any live surf clams.  We also have a load of Live EELS.  Pete Kelly was just in with a nice Derby Bass to weigh in.  What a way to start off the day.  Pete's 27.84 pound, 43.00 inch Bass was caught just before midnight from the Surf City beach using Fresh Bunker.  This fish also puts Pete in 3rd place in our store Striped Bass Tournament.  Nice fish Pete!!!   Sorry I didn't wake up the first time you called.  I will try and keep you all updated as more reports come in. - John

Thursday 11/09- Challenging surf fishing conditions persisted again today, but that didn't stop most of you guys  We had several Striped Bass weighed in for the Derby along with some released fish and non-tournament boat caught fish.  All very good signs that our Fall run is underway.   Updates follow in reverse chronological order.  Photos are on our "2017 PHOTOS" page.- John

6:55 PM Update- Here is some of the action from today.  There are at least 2 more Derby weigh-in's that will be in the next update.    Merle Van Liere weighed in his 22.74 pound, 42.00 inch Derby Bass this afternoon.  Merle caught the fish in Loveladies on fresh bunker.  This fish moves Merle into 3rd place in our store Bass tournament as well.  Cathy Thiel with the first Derby fish entered by a woman this year.  Cathy weighed her fish at Fisherman's HQ, but stopped in here as well.  Cathy's Bass went 15.9 pounds, 38 inches, and hit bunker right here in Surf City.  We had some no-named boat fishermen in to weigh their 34 pound Bass they trolled up on a bunker spoon today not far from the Barnegat Inlet.  Another Derby Bass was brought in by Tom Daly.  Tom's 10.22 pound, 33-1/4 inch fish hit fresh bunker from the Harvey Cedars surf.  Congrats to everyone!!!  Looks like we might have the beginning of our fall run.  I have more photos to come, so stay tuned. - John
3:30 PM Update- Still waiting on our Fresh Bunker.  Let you know when it arrives.  I am currently off the Island until 5-6pm tonight, so you may want to call the store in case our bunker is delivered between now and 6pm.  Also there have been 4 Striped Bass weighed in for the Derby early this afternoon.  Looks like the fish might be here regardless of the fishing conditions.  Not sure how many of these fish were weighed in here at our shop.  I will get photos up ASAP for any weigh-in's we had. - John
1:20 PM Update- The heavy surf and loads of seaweed did not stop Francis Hettler from releasing this 18 inch Striped Bass today.  Conditions are challenging today with some anglers leaving after a couple loads of weed on their lines.  Hope conditions improve soon. - John
5:50 AM- Francis Hettler just called from the front beach.  He is holding with 8-10 ounces, but not for long.  Once there is enough seaweed on the line it starts to roll down the beach.  Conditions are fishable but annoying with the weed in the water.  Bait status - we are out of Fresh Bunker until later today.  I will let you know as soon as the fresh bunker arrives.  We have salted clams, but still no clams in the shell.  We have clams in the shell on order with every delivery.  Let you know if/when we get any live surf clams.  We also have a load of Live EELS and Green Crabs.  Let you know if I hear of any reports today.

Wednesday 11/08- Very rough surf conditions persist.  10-12 ounces not holding bottom for most anglers.  No fish reported at all. - John

Tuesday 11/07- Very rough conditions today on the beaches.  But we did have a couple nice derby Bass weighed in, before it got really nasty.  John Baxter caught this 29.76 pound, 42-1/2 inch Bass right here in Surf City using fresh bunker.  This fish also puts John in 2nd place in our store tournament.  Then Danny Mandzak stopped in with his 20.32 pound, 37-1/4 inch Striped Bass beached in Harvey Cedars.  Danny was also using fresh bunker, and his fish moves into 3rd place in our store tournament.  Nice fish guys and congrats!!! - John

Loughren Jr. (photo below) weighed in this 8.10 pound, 29-1/2 inch Striped Bass at 1:00PM today.  T.J. caught this fish last night at 11:20PM in Ship Bottom using Bunker.  Nice job T.J.!!!  That's about it for today on the reports unless something comes in tonight. - John

Saturday 11/04- Very slow along the front beaches again today 10 ounces or more were needed most of the day.  There was one 15 pound class Bluefish weighed in for the Derby, but that was about it.  The only action we saw here was on Tog by Jon, who stopped in with a keeper Blackfish from the Barnegat rocks using green crabs.  He had a load of short fish before this one hit.  Then Nick, stopped in to show me this picture of his 38 pound Bass he beached this past Wednesday, November 1st.  That's the same day that John weighed in his 48 pound Derby leading fish.  Nick was fishing the north-end surf using a bunker head.  Very nice fish!!!  Really hoping we see more fish in this size class soon.  Thanks to Jon & Nick for stopping in with your reports & photos.  Photos are on our "2017 PHOTOS" page.- John

Friday 11/03- No Derby size fish reported or weighed in today.  Heard of a couple short bass on bait and plugs but skates & sandsharks were the norm for almost fishing the beaches today.  Blackfish at the inlet is still productive for many anglers targeting them. - John

Thursday 11/02- We did have a bass weighed in for the derby today.  Francis Hettler beached his 11.92 pound, 29-1/2 inch long line-sider at 6:30AM this morning right here in Surf City using fresh bunker.  Nice fish Francis!!!  Other reports today were on the slow side with skates & dogfish dominating most of the action.  Photos are on our "2017 PHOTOS" page.- John

Wednesday 11/01- I got back to the shop and received a couple nice reports.  An angler Matt sent in this photo and the following report:  "Figured I give you guys a report.  I road my bike to Morrison's marina with nothing but my pole that had a snapper size diamond jig.   After 10 minutes a huge school of peanut bunker came by with Stripers all over them.  Caught 4 in the half hour the bait was around.  1 keeper and the rest were 18-25".  It was nuts.  Again, just thought I'd give you a report to give everyone some hope.  Been down in Holgate at the end for the past 3 hours with NO sign of life."  Then John Matt was in with this Monster Striped Bass for the Derby.  The fish weighed 48.00 pounds, and was 51-1/2 inches long.  John beached the fish right here in Surf City using fresh bunker.  This fish will be tough to beat for sure.  This fish moves John into first place in our store tournament in addition to any Derby Prizes.  A huge thanks to Matt for his report and Congratulations to John on a Bass of a lifetime!!!  We had two more Bass weighed in later in the day.  Rob Press of the Pennsauken Fishing Club, caught this 10.14 pounder from the Brant Beach surf.  Steve Brown had this 11.48 pound Bass from the beach in Ship Bottom.  Both fish were caught using Fresh Bunker.  Looks like the fishing might be picking up - finally.  Nice fish guys and Congrats!!!  Photos are on our "2017 PHOTOS" page.- John

OCTOBER 2017

Tuesday 10/31- Very slow on the surf fish scene again.  No fish weighed in for the Derby in.  Skates & Dogfish were the only reports that came in to the shop.  Hope things improve soon. - John

Monday 10/30- We did have a weigh-in for the Derby today.  Tony Agresta beached this 11.00 pound, 31-3/4 inch Striped Bass at 1:45PM today on fresh bunker.  Tony was fishing right here in Surf City and was holding with 4 ounces.  I noticed several sea lice on this fish when I was weighing it in.  Several guys have been in for bunker in the last few hours, but no other fish reported yet.  There were 2 groups of guys fishing the Ship Bottom surf and they needed 8 ounces to hold there.  The water is also on the dirty side from the reports that have been coming in.  I will keep you posted on any other reports I get in.  Photos are on our "2017 PHOTOS" page.- John

Sunday 10/29- Brendan Craig weighed in his first Striped Bass for the Derby.  Brendan's fish was 12.72 pounds, 32-1/2 inches long, and hit fresh bunker at Barnegat Light.  This fish now moves Brendan into 3rd place in our Fall Striped Bass Store Tournament as well as leading for the largest Derby Bass for today.  Brendan was using 10 oz. to hold and said he might have been able to get away using just 8.  Randy Swartley also came in with his first Striped Bass for the Derby this year.  Randy beached his 7.70 pound, 28.00 inch fish right here in Surf City using bunker this morning at 8:30AM.  Randy was holding with 8 ounces.  TJ was fishing the mid-island area and said he was also holding with 8 ounces, but had nothing but crabs chewing up his bait.  The surf conditions are challenging and will get more extreme through tonight and early tomorrow.  But it is "fishable" for those with the equipment designed to throw 10 or more ounces.  If you can't hold bottom try walking with the bait as it rolls down the beach.  The longer you can keep it in the trough the better your chances.  Photos are on our "2017 PHOTOS" page.- John

Saturday 10/28- Really hoping the fishing might be improving a little bit- They are weighing in a derby Bass out back as I'm writing this.  I will update with a photo & details later.  We did have the first legal Red Drum get weighed in for the Derby this morning.  Pat Presutto beached the 26.00 inch, 7.24 pound Red right here in Surf City using Fresh Bunker.  Congrats to Pat!!  There were some weigh-in's besides the Red Drum.  Eric Setzer caught this 8.16 pound, 28-1/2 inch Bass at Barnegat Light using bunker at 10:30PM on the 27th.  This fish moved Eric into 3rd place in our store Bass contest until Bob Braack walked in with his Bass.  Bob caught the 11.54 pound, 33.00 inch Bass in Harvey Cedars using fresh bunker.  So now Bob is in 3rd place in our store bass tournament.  Nice fish guys!!!  Hope this is a sign that things are improving.  Photos are on our "2017 PHOTOS" page.- John

Monday 07/03- Did have some Kingfish reported from the surf today.  Also heard a report of some nice size bluefish at the inlet.  No photos or fish brought to our scales today though.  We did just have a nice blue claw come in for our Kids Crabbing Contest.  9 year old Helen came in with Mom & Dad and this 5-5/8 inch crab.  Congratulations to Helen and thank you for stopping in to measure your catch.  We will NOT be getting in any fresh bunker until tomorrow morning.  I will let you know as soon as it comes in.  We do have frozen & salted until the fresh comes in.  We are open tomorrow (July 4th) from 6:00AM until 9:00PM in case you were wondering.  Hope to have some fish hit the scales soon.  - John

Sunday 07/02- Did hear of a few kingfish and fluke today from the LBI beaches & inlet.  Bob Massa had several short fish along with this 20 inch keeper.  6 year old Kenny was in to measure his 5.50 inch blue claw for our Kids Crabbing contest.  Nice job Kenny!!!  Also received this nice picture from Corey Iannotta of a 30 inch Bass caught on Thursdsay, June 29th from LBI.  Corey and his group had 2 other bass that night.  There are always some resident/local Striped Bass in the area, you just have to be at the right place at the right time.  Photos are on our "2017 PHOTOS" page. - John

Saturday 07/01- Not much to report from the Fishing scene today.  A couple of fluke from the front beach, but most of the reports were of skates & dogfish.  Brown sharks are giving a few anglers a good fight once in a while as well.  We did have our first crabs come in for the start of our 2017 Kids Crabbing Contest.  Payton & Nolan came in with a 5.75 inch blue crab to start off the contest in first place.  Then 2 year old Quinn stopped in with her 5.25 inch crab which held 2nd place for a little while.  In the afternoon we had a new leader in our crab contest with a 6-1/8 inch blue claw by 7 year old Giovanni.  Right behind Giovanni was 6 year old Masen with his 6.00 inch crab.  We also got a picture of Lindsay and her first crab ever caught.  While Lindsay isn't in the crabbing contest, a first is a first as you can see from her smile.  Congratulations everyone, and thanks so much for stopping in with your catch!!! - John

JUNE 2017

Friday 06/30- Not much to report on the surf fishing scene today.  Hard South wind made fishing the beach a challenge.  Crabbing continued to be very good.  Brown sharks reported in the bay for those fishing for them. - John

Thursday 06/29- The only report I have from the morning is from Dr. Tom.  He was out this morning with James on a guided fishing lesson and caught/released at least this Dogfish.  Late in the day Dave & Joe stopped in with a 9 pound Bluefish they boated while fluke fishing in the Barnegat Bay.  I have a photo of their Bluefish somewhere and will try and get that up later.  They said the Fluke fishing was very slow.  Did hear of a couple kingfish from the surf, but it was rough and I don't think they are consistent yet.  Hope that will happen soon. - John

Wednesday 06/28- Surf fishing still slow for most anglers.  Some Kingfish are showing up in the surf but it's still not consistent.  I still think Fluke fishing is your best bet until the Kingfish & small Bluefish are more consistent in the surf.  Joe stopped in this morning with this 4 pound Fluke caught yesterday on his boat in the Barnegat Bay.  They only had the one keeper and a few shorts for the day.  It was tough to get a decent drift and the fishing was slow Joe reported. - John

Tuesday 06/27- Very slow fishing the surf today for most anglers.  We did have a few Kingfish reported from the front beach here in Surf City earlier today.  Also heard of a nice Fluke from the inlet rocks this morning as well.  We only had one fish come to our scales today though.  Donny boated this nice 4.62 pound, 22.75 inch Fluke from the Barnegat Bay on one of his own hand made bucktails tipped with gulp.  Very nice fish Donny!  We did get a load of fresh bunker in today that should last through tomorrow.  Still hope to get another fresh load of bunker tomorrow as well, but I will have to keep you posted on that.  Unfortunately we did not get our live minnows in today, hopefully that will happen tomorrow.  Photos are on our "2017 PHOTOS" page. - John

Monday 06/26- Jerry Scaturo strikes again today with this nice 19.5 inch, 2.5 pound Fluke from the LBI surf this morning using Gulp Shrimp.  Nice fish Jerry, and thanks for stopping in to weigh your catch.  Some reports on Fluke fishing from a few boats today with several keepers in the mix along with shorts.  The best news I've heard all day though came from Coach Dan.  He nailed a dozen Kingfish earlier today from the Surf City beach using Fishbites.  Hoping this is the start of some decent King fish action.  Photos are on our "2017 PHOTOS" page. - John

Sunday 06/25- Still on the slow side for the most part along the beaches yesterday.  Skates & Dogfish dominated most of the reports, but we did have a couple nice Fluke reported.  Michael Terek caught this 20 inch keeper fluke at the Barnegat inlet on a mackerel strip.  This was Michael's first attempt at salt water fishing here.  Jay also had a nice keeper fluke from the north end surf.  Crabbing is also keeping most people busy that are trying for them.  Photos are on our "2017 PHOTOS" page. - John

Saturday 06/24- Surf fishing was still on the slow side for the most part.  Skates & Dogfish seem to dominate most of the reports.  Crabbing continues to be productive for most folks giving that a try in the bay & lagoons.  We had our first Striped Bass in a while come in to the shop.  6 year old Ben Pirrello beached this 29-3/4 inch, 10 pound Bass from the Surf City beach this morning on salted clam.  Ben casted, hooked, and landed this fish all on his own.  Congrats to Ben!!!!!  BTW- when Ben's dad Steve fillet the fish it had 22 sand fleas in it's stomach.  Jerry Scaturo landed this 21 inch, 3.25 pound flattie from the LBI surf this morning using Gulp Shrimp. - John

Friday 06/23- Fishing reports were skates & dogfish for the most part today.  A few Fluke & Kingfish have been reported along the beaches as well.  Crabbing has been good for many folks trying that.  More anglers are trying for sharks in the evening hoping that bite turns on soon.  Have had a few reports of Sand Tiger & Brown Sharks from the bay side, but still kind of slow. - John

Thursday 06/22- Fishing reports were skates & dogfish for the most part today.  Cody and his guided fishing lesson did catch some Kingfish as well as a big ray and of course skates & dogfish.  Crabbing has been good for many folks trying that.  More anglers are trying for sharks in the evening hoping that bite turns on soon.  Have had a few reports of Sand Tiger & Brown Sharks from the bay side, but still kind of slow. - John

Wednesday 06/21- The 1st day of Summer 2017 started with very little going on along the beaches.  Most are trying for Fluke with a few shorts reported here and there.  Crabbing continues to be very good for those giving that a try.  The Hettler brothers were in at 5:00PM for fresh bunker.  They just sent me a report via text.  They caught 2 "accidental" Kingfish on large hooks/bait meant for Bass/Blues.  They also caught a big bluefish.  They did release a ton of skates & dogfish in the process though.  Still, not a bad report considering the past week or so.  Thanks to the Hettler brothers for their report.  I still think we have kingfish out there, just nobody really trying for them.  Can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. - John

Tuesday 06/20- It might sound like I'm repeating myself but the report has not changed in several days.  The beach fishing is still on the slow side.  Fluke along the beaches seem to be your best chance at success these days, but it's hard not to throw a chunk of bunker in hopes of a big striped bass.  A few Brown & Sand Tiger sharks are being reported by anglers.  Crabbing has also been very good for those giving that a try.  Still no more reports of Kingfish, but I'm not sure there are many trying.  Really hope they make a decent showing this summer.  We are out of Fresh Bunker until tomorrow (Wednesday).  Was hoping for today but that is not going to happen. - sorry.  No specific reports yet today.  Let you know if I hear anything going on.  Unfortunately we are out of live minnows - very sorry.  There is a problem with our tank.  Let you know when we have them back in.  Our tank problem did not impact our live eels so we are still OK with those. - John

Monday 06/19- Slow fishing on the beach continues.  Fluke is probably your best bet in the surf at the moment.  Crabbing seems to be doing well though.  Lets hope the summer fish like kingfish & cocktail blues make a showing soon.  Did get the following report from Jon Mendillo:  "Fished the south end this morning at low tide.  Only 1 small fluke.  Water really stained.  Not alot of grass.  Tried to throw bunker but couldn't hold bottom even with 8oz.  Just wanted to give you a report since I'm always checking your website."  A huge thank you to Jon for sending in his report.  FYI- you can send reports via our FaceBook page or text them directly to me at (856) 834-6634. - John

Sunday 06/18- Slow fishing on the beach again today.  Bob Masa did bring in a keeper fluke from the north end beach though.  Boaters did OK with fluke and seabass. - John

Saturday 06/17- We did just get in a load of Fresh Bunker, but only about 100 pounds so it won't last long.  Beach fishing today is once again on the slow side.  We did have some Fluke come to our scale today though.  Tim Rosquist stopped in with his Birthday Fluke today of 4.3 pounds, 24 inches from the back bay.  Bob Masa stopped in with his 20 inch Fluke from the north end beach this morning.  The largest Fluke of the day (so far) came in from Dave Peterson.  Dave landed this 6 pound, 25 inch Fluke on the boat the "Dirty Martuna".  The Bass & Bluefish action seems to have slowed, but the Fluke are here.   Photos are on our "2017 PHOTOS" page. - John

Friday 06/16- Very little to report unfortunately. - John

Thursday 06/15- Another slow day on the beach for most anglers.  We did have a bluefish & some short fluke reported, but big sandsharks/dogfish were the common theme.  That's now 3 days in a row without a fish coming to our scales - Ugh!!  Hope that changes soon.

Wednesday 06/14- Slow day again on the beach for most anglers.  A few bluefish & fluke reported, along with some big sandsharks/dogfish.  That's 2 days in a row without a fish coming to our scales.  Hope that changes soon. - John

Tuesday 06/13- Slow day on the beach for most anglers.  A few bluefish & fluke were reported but nothing came to our scale.  Our son Cole did manage a 20 inch bluefish on his first attempt for the summer.  Big sandsharks/dogfish are also being reported by most surf casters.  Still no additional reports on kingfish - hope that changes soon. - John

Monday 06/12- We did have some bluefish action on the beach, but slower than recent days.  Bobby was out with his buddies and limited out on Seabass.  Several reports of fluke along the front beaches including a few keepers.  One family that rented a 10 foot surf rod and bought a little "zebco" combo beached 2 keeper fluke on the little zebco from the beach.  Waiting on some photos of that.  Jeff Crabtree hit the inlet in search of fluke.  he did get a nice keeper fluke but also nailed this 35.5 inch, 13.5 pound Striped Bass on white Gulp meant for fluke. - John

Sunday 06/11- Bluefish action on the beach continued, Striped Bass slowed a bit compared to Saturday.  Fluke also along the front beaches.  Updates follow in reverse chronological order.  Photos are on our "2017 PHOTOS" page.
2:30 PM Update- Bob Massa stopped in with this nice 23 inch Fluke he caught this morning from the north-end surf.  Bob teaches a free class during the summer on how to target all species from the surf, but he really concentrates on his favorite - Fluke.  His classes are at 6:00PM on Sundays beginning the first Sunday in July and runs weekly through August.  Stay tuned for more details or just stop in on Sundays this Summer at 6PM.  Also had a nice report sent in from "Steve from Ship Bottom"  He had a friend Colin Magill (age 19) visiting from Lumberton, NJ. who got into his first ever Striped Bass.  He landed and released 2 Bass of 18, and 26 inches from the mid-island surf on bunker.  Congrats to Colin, and thanks to Steve for sending in this report.
10:15 AM- Several nice size Striped Bass reported throughout the day at a variety of locations.  Good sign I think since we have already had fish reported this morning.  Cody Schmutz has moved into 3rd place in out store Striped Bass contest with this 26.60 pound fish from the mid-island surf this morning on bunker.  JT sent in this photo of a monster 30.30 pound Bass taken last night from the mid-island surf also on bunker.  Miguel also had a nice fish last night while fishing the Barnegat Inlet with bunker.  He sent in this "selfie" of a nice 36 inch Bass.  The fish seem to be here so get out there if you can.  We still have fresh bunker from yesterday as well as surf clams.  We are out of EELS until  tomorrow.  Loads of people in this morning for bait.  Will let you know when more reports come in.

Saturday 06/10- Bluefish action on the beach continued, but the real story was Striped Bass.  Several nice size fish were beached throughout the day.  Probably the most productive day for Striped Bass this Spring so far.  Updates follow in reverse chronological order.  Photos are on our "2017 PHOTOS" page.

I was fishing with 10oz. of weight with a fish finder.  Lots of weeds but because of the weeds I was reeling in a lot to clean up, and that is when 3 of my 4 hook ups happened.  I was back in the door at 7:45, out of bait and arms were tired.  Having fun!  I'll get that striper yet."  Thanks to Dan for the detailed report, and good luck on that Striped Bass. - John.

Sunday 05/28- Bluefish, Bass, a few Fluke, and big Dogfish were keeping several anglers busy on/off during the day and evening.  The fishing wasn't the best action we've seen this Spring, but some anglers did catch fish.  Josh R.  was in with this nice 41.25 inch, 22.20 pound Bass that hit bunker from the mid-island surf just as the rain hit this evening.  Josh also had a few bluefish before this linesider hit.  He grabbed more bunker and was headed back to the beach.  James, Marrisa, Rudy I, and Rudy II just left the shop and were headed to the beach in search of Bass themselves.  I'm hoping to hit the beach around midnight to throw some swimming plugs.  Unless the urge to sleep wins out which is usually what happens to me.  Did get a nice text from our friend Jimmy Betz.  He & wife Shirl say hello from Island Beach State Park, where they had some bluefish action as you can see from the photo he sent.  Another Jimmy stopped in this afternoon with his report of his 34 inch Bass on salted clam from the surf.  The fish hit at 2:00PM.  Reports of bluefish here and there from the front beaches continue but the action is scattered.  We did have some Fluke reported this morning from the surf with at least one keeper in the mix.  I did get a nice photo from Nick Schmidt with his 36 inch, 17 pound Bass from the Surf City beach last night on bunker.  Nice fish Nick and thanks for the report and the photo.  Photos are on our "2017 PHOTOS" page. - John

Saturday 05/27- Bluefish, Bass, and now Fluke action were keeping many anglers busy on the beaches & bay.  The fishing wasn't the hottest action we've seen this Spring, but several anglers did catch fish.  Updates follow in reverse chronological order.  Photos are on our "2017 PHOTOS" page. - John
10:30 PM Update- Had some late weigh-ins this evening.  First in walked 7 year old Jayden with this 22 inch, 3.86 pound Fluke from the Harvey Cedars surf this evening just before dark.  This fish fell to a Hopkins that Dad had thrown, and hit it very close to shore.  They also had a few bluefish on bunker as well.  Congrats to Jayden and thanks for stopping in to weigh your fish and give us your report.  Tom Nitting was just in with this 39 inch, 20.70 pound Bass that hit a bunker head from the mid-island surf just before 10:00PM.  Tom was in earlier and grabbed our last bunker and caught bluefish, skate, sandshark, and this Bass all one a single bunker.  Guess it does only take one.  Steve Pirrello sent in this shot of his boys Ben & Lachlan with a nice bluefish.  They beached this guy on their first cast from the Surf City suds using bunker.
7:30 PM Update- We are still waiting on our fresh bunker delivery.  Just got a call though and the ETA is 8:00PM, but I will send an update when it arrives.  Did have some fish weighed in this afternoon though.  Donny Dempsey had this 14.88 pound bluefish on an SP minnow from the bay on LBI.  This was one of two bluefish he caught and is good for 3rd place in our store Bluefish Tournament.  Then Rich Bergman came in with this 'Simply Bassing' weigh-in.  Rich caught the 14.92 pound, 35.25 inch Bass from the Ship Bottom surf on a bunker chunk.
8:35 AM- Another decent day yesterday surf fishing on LBI.  We have had better, but the seaweed finally cleared up and fish were caught.  Bluefish, Bass, & Fluke reported by several anglers.  It's been very busy all morning with anglers arriving before 5:00AM to bait up and hit the beaches, bays, & ocean.  Bluefish and Bass already reported this morning.  Nothing has come to our scales yet today, but here are some photos from last night's action.  Andrew had this a keeper Bass along with a load of Bluefish last night on bunker.  George Stanski sent in these pictures of his 40 inch, 25 pound Bass and a 9.5 pound Bluefish from the mid-island surf on bunker.

Friday 05/26- Several Bluefish reported throughout the day, evening, and well after dark.  Did have a few Bass reported as well and one came to the scales by Pat.  Pat's Striped Bass went 23.26 lbs, 39 inches long and hit bunker in morning from the #LBI surf.  Fluke fishing reports were scarce but shorts were reported from land-based anglers, some keepers reported by boaters.  Photos are on our "2017 PHOTOS" page. - John

Thursday 05/25- Heard of a few Fluke caught on this opening day of 2017.  Shorts from shore and a few nice keepers bu boat.  Surf fishing was "OK" with a few fish caught.  Steve Deffler stopped in with this 35 inch, 16.66 pound Striped Bass this evening from the mid-island surf on CLAM.  Steve & his buddy had another keeper bass and a load of bluefish as well.  Steve sent me these photos of his girlfriend Darlene with her first ever fish from the beach last weekend.  It was a 12 pound bluefish on bunker.  Congrats to Darlene!!!!  Also received a report from Dennis Stepien & his buddy Paul Fauver.  They had several bluefish and this 35 inch, 9 pound Striped Bass while fishing the mid-island surf this morning with bunker.  They were holding with 5-6 oz., but the seaweed was there again today.  The seaweed was a huge nuisance, but not bad enough to stop them from fishing.  This was Paul's first Striped Bass ever, so Congrats to Paul!!!  Photos are on our "2017 PHOTOS" page.

Wednesday 05/24- Several reports of Bluefish and a few Bass today.  Seaweed was reported on the heavy side from many anglers, but fish were still caught.  Andrew had a few Bluefish and a 39 inch, 22 pound Striped Bass tonight from the mid-island surf on bunker chunks.  My buddy stopped in around 8:00PM to let me know that a big bluefish "smoked" his 30 year old Penn 850SS.  I lent him one of my 30 year old Penn 750SS reels for the night.  Hope that one holds up to these bluefish.  Had another Bass come to the scale around 8:00PM as well.  Chris Custer was fishing the mid-island surf this afternoon with his buddies when this Bass hit.  The 36 inch, 17.16 pound "non-tournament" fish hit a bunker chunk.  They also had a few bluefish as well.   Jeff Crabtree was the first to stop in with a fish today.  This nice 32.75 inch Bass went 13.52 pounds.  Jeff was using bunker from the mid-island surf in the afternoon.  Thanks to everyone for your reports and photos.   Photos are on our "2017 PHOTOS" page. - John

Lance Purcell! Found some monster blues to 14 pounds in the bay off sod bank landed 7 of 8 in 5 hours of fishing! They loved Surf City Baits fresh bunker!!".  Thanks Lance for the kind words and your report.  Thanks also to Dylan & Mark for stopping in with your fish and report.  Let you know if I hear anything more. - John
